Having both dogs and cats in my house, I can tell you that a cat’s urine smell is worse compared to a dog’s urine smell. A year ago I had never experienced my cats urinating outside of their litter box, but now I can’t determine why they are urinating outside. Pet odor removal is quite difficult and should be confronted seriously. So you should know how to get rid of cat urine smell, here are some steps that you can follow.
What to Do First in Removing Cat Urine Smell
The first line of defense is determining what is causing this odd behavior. There are certain medical reasons your cat may be urinating outside of their litter box, like urinary tract infections and feline diabetes. If you suspect that your cat’s problem is medically based, you should consult your vet immediately.

If your cat’s behavior does not stem from a medical problem, there are other reasons they may be urinating outside of the litter box. Stress is a common factor in a cat’s behavior. If you have a new pet inside the house, it is commonly seen that cats urinate outside the litter box because they are still adapting to the environmental change. Try rearranging the furniture and see if that works.
You can also determine if the litter box is the main problem. Make sure that litter box is clean. Also make sure that there are enough litter boxes in your home because a single one can be a pain, especially if you have more than one cat. If you have changed to a new litter box it is best that you stick with the old one your cat is familiar with placed in a comfortable spot, then slowly introduce the new litter box.
Cat Urine Composition
Urine contains proteins, sodium, uric acid, electrolytes, and creatinine. The main reason for the strong “trademark” smell of the urine is the uric acid crystals. It is complicated more by urea which makes the urine smell stick. It is also quite concentrated. You can successfully remove the odor using an enzyme cleaner, which can be found at any pet store. These enzymes will successfully breakdown the bacteria and crystals.
Removing Cat Urine Odor Located in Your Carpet
There are only two products that can successfully remove stains as well as smell from your carpet: Anti-Icky-Poo and Nature’s Miracle. It is important not use these products with any other products because it may impede the efficiency. You need to first saturate the carpet with the enzyme cleaner. There are simple directions on the products’ bottles that should be followed, but generally, once you have applied the cleaner you can leave it for 24 hours. It can take up to two weeks for the carpet to completely dry. There may be times that you need to do a second or even a third treatment on the carpet.
Removing Cat Urine and Locating the Urine Odor
It can be quite difficult to pinpoint where the smell originates. You could try using a black light. The urine will glow if it is exposed to blacklight. This is a fantastic way of locating your cat’s urine. You can buy a blacklight in your nearest hardware store. Some pet stores also sell them (I was able to find mine at Petco).
